What you need

• A USB drive

We recommend you use Witgui if you use macOS. Wii Backup Manager doesn’t work on macOS.

To play multiple games, we recommend a USB-powered external hard drive for your Wii. We will refer to it as a “USB drive” in this guide. Most of the ones you can find on the market should work fine if they have USB 2 backwards compatibility. Drives with 1 TB or more in capacity will work. A flash drive will also work, but due to the size of a flash drive, it won’t be able to store as many games.

Make sure your USB drive is formatted as FAT32 or NTFS. Do not format it as other types such as extFS or WBFS, the latter is an old format of storing Wii games.

Instructions

Section I - Downloading

1. Extract Wii Backup Manager, and launch the program.
2. Insert your USB drive into your computer.

Section II - Copying Games Over

1. Go to the Drive 1 tab, then select Drive.
2. Select the drive that you’re using for the Wii games.
3. Go to the Files tab, then select Add.
4. Select Files to add multiple games to the program, or select Folder to add a whole folder of games.
5. Select Transfer, then select Drive 1 to transfer the games over. It might take a while for the games to copy over.

What is a WBFS file?

WBFS is a file extension used for game image files. WBFS file stores copy of video game for Wii game console developed by Nintendo. Game copies can be made using Wiimms ISO Tools application and saved on SD card or USB drive.

WBFS is also the name of a system file format that is used to store WFBS files. WBFS game image files can be used to run games on different systems using various Wii emulators. WBFS files can also be converted into ISO files.

How to associate the file with an installed software?

If you want to associate a file with a new program (e.g. my-file.WBFS) you have two ways to do it. The first and the easiest one is to right-click on the selected WBFS file. From the drop-down menu select 'Choose default program', then click 'Browse' and find the desired program. The whole operation must be confirmed by clicking OK. The second and more difficult to do is associate the WBFS file extension to the corresponding software in the Windows Registry.

Is there one way to open unknown files?

Many files contain only simple text data. It is possible that while opening unknown files (e.g. WBFS) with a simple text editor like Windows Notepad will allow us to see some of the data encoded in the file.
